With fish increasingly scarce, fishing authorities have been forced to extend the closed season from three to five months to protect marine species and guarantee reproduction.
The closed season used to extend from January to March for species such as crab, shrimp and fishing with nets, but the Ministry of Fisheries extended the closed season from November last year until 31 March this year.
The decision did not please the fishermen, who say they have no other source of income. A large part of the fishermen in Govuro, for example, cannot go to sea during the period and consequently cannot support themselves, as they allegedly live from fishing alone.
Presenting their concerns at a meeting with Henriques Bongece in the district of Govuro, the fishermen suggested to the deputy minister that the ban should only extend over June and July, when, because it is cold, catches are limited.
Deputy Minister Henriques Bonjesse sympathised with their difficulties, but said the measure was necessary, and indeed in their interest, because only an extension of the closed period would guarantee fish in any quantity and quality.
