Three teenagers aged 14 to 17 narrowly escaped death when they almost drowned off a beach in Beira city, Sofala province on Saturday.
The beach, where bathing is expressly prohibited, is located in the Grande Hotel area, the National Service of Public Safety (SENSAP) said. Drawn to the beach by Saturday’s intense heat, the inexperienced bathers decided to venture into the sea at low tide, when several sandbanks were visible.
Deceived by the placid low tide prospect, the youngsters wandered into the sea, but got distracted and failed to take into account that the tide would come in again at any moment. And so it did, erasing the sandbanks they were counting on for their safe return to dry land.
They suddenly found themselves stranded and in real danger of drowning. Luckily, however, their distraught cries for help attracted the attention of a fisherman, who rescued them and delivered them safely back to shore.
