The First Lady of Mozambique, Isaura Nyusi, recognises that despite concerted efforts to ensure the welfare of the elderly, we continue to see their rights violated and neglected.
In an International Elderly Day message on Friday, Isaura Nyusi said she found it aggravating that these situations were often perpetrated by the children, grandchildren or other dependents and relatives of the elderly.
“This situation is very worrying. So in this context, my cabinet has launched an appeal to all public, private and civil society for their active and ongoing involvement in the mass dissemination, implementation and promotion of laws protecting the rights of the elderly,” her message reads.
According to the First Lady, older people are a source of inspiration – hence her outrage at any harm inflicted upon them.
“For this reason, we are all called upon to repudiate any form of discrimination against the elderly, and bring perpetrators to justice regardless of the personages involved” she says.
Isaura Nyusi calls on all Mozambicans to observe and promote, within their own sphere of activity, the rights of the elderly, acknowledging that “if we exist today, it is because yesterday someone took care of us”.
International Elderly Day was established by the United Nations in 1991 in order to sensitize society to issues surrounding aging and the need to protect the elderly.
“Let’s all celebrate this date with respect, love and affection,” the president’s wife said.
