More than 500 market stalls were consumed by a large fire on Tuesday night (November 8) in the city of Nampula.
The fire brigade attended the incident but could not prevent the losses.
Most of the stalls belonged to foreign citizens from various African countries. The fire, allegedly caused by a short circuit, started at around 11:00 p.m., but was only finally extinguished around 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday (November 9).
The SENSAP commander on the scene said that difficulties accessing the interior of the market and the existence of flammable material were some of the problems faced during attempts to put out the fire.
