A truck carrying more than 500 bags of cement caught fire in Beira city’s Macurungo neighbourhood on Thursday morning. Thanks to the swift intervention of SENSAP firefighters, no-one was hurt.
Speaking on the sidelines of World Firefighters’ Day, SENSAP spokesman for Sofala province, Fernando Meque, said the blaze was caused by a short circuit in the vehicle.
He explained that the corporation arrived in time to avoid the vehicle’s total destruction and that some of the load it was carrying at the time of the event was saved.
“The truck had left a yard to distribute cement to commercial establishments in the city,” Meque explained. “Our presence was quite swift, and we were able to extinguish the fire.”
There were no injuries, and the cargo was not completely destroyed, he added.
Meque observed that that has been an escalation in the number of fires, this being the fourth instance.
Most of these, he added, result from negligence, despite repeated awareness campaigns in homes and various sectors.
Most fires happen at home, he said, the main causes being short circuits and open flames, especially candles and matches.
