According to “O País” on Sunday, a wildfire was burning in Maputo Special Reserve, endangering the lives of animals living there.
Reserve director Miguel Gonçalves told O Pais that the cause of the fire was not yet known for sure, but that he suspected someone has tossed away a still-lit cigarette, or that one of the groups authorized to cut eucalyptus in the reserve had lit a fire for cooking which had gotten out of control.
“The fire will not affect larger animals, but infrastructure and smaller animals may be in danger,” he said.
Asked if the reserve would be able to put the fire out, the director said that there was no fire-fighting capacity for a fire of such proportions readily available in the area.
Created in 1932, the Maputo Special Reserve conservation area is located in the southernmost part of Mozambique, in the district of Matutuíne.
The reserve is especially noted for the variety and richness of its habitats, including pristine beaches, mangroves, savannah, coastal forests on dunes and lagoons. It is home to about 350 species of birds.
