At least 30 people, most of them school-age children, have been homeless since yesterday, after fire gutted six homes in Quarteirão 24, Bairro Militar, in Maputo.
The fire is said to have been caused by a short circuit on the Mozambique Electricity (EDM) electricity pole, which initially set one residence alight, the fire quickly spreading to five other houses because of their close proximity.
Residents tried unsuccessfully to quench the flames with buckets of water and a fire extinguisher. They also removed cooking gas cylinders to prevent explosions. Nevertheless, the fire spread quickly, consuming many of their belongings.
“I received a call from the neighbourhood reporting the fire, and called the fire brigade, who sent three water trucks, but it was not enough, and we lost everything,” said António Carlos, head of a family of six.
Fernando Beni, another victim, said that his roof had collapsed, and he did not know where he would take his family to shelter, should it rain.
Head of Block Nina Macave said that a list of the victims eligible for support from neighbourhood structures would be made.
‘Notícias’ learned that EDM attended the scene and removed some electrical cables so as to prevent further damage, leaving the neighbourhood temporarily without electricity.
