Screen grab: Miramar
A fire broke out on Wednesday night (19-07) at the T-3 neighbourhood market in Matola municipality, destroying several stalls and ‘barracas’ (informal shops).
Information about the immediate cause of the accident is still scarce, but the authorities are expected to provide more details this Friday (21-07).
Some sellers suspect arson.
“We suspect that the fire was caused by the boxes that one of the food vendors was burning. When we went home, we were convinced that everything was already taken care of,” one said.
“However, around 8:00 p.m., we received calls reporting that the market was on fire, and that firefighters were putting out the fire with the help of some traders who were trying to extinguish it with water from the market,” vendors explained.
By Thursday afternoon, the Municipality of Matola was already removing the charred garbage, and said that it would provide support after an evaluation was carried out.
Spokesman for the National Public Safety Service (SENSAP) firefighters, Leonildo Pelembe, promised to comment this Friday.
