About the fire at UEM University students’ residence in Maputo

A fire in a contained area housing the generator of a university students residence, a building designed by renowned Mozambican architect Pancho Gudes and known locally as ‘SELF’ has left students and guards in a panic.
The fire began at around 9 p.m. last Wednesday evening, when most of the students were in the residence causing justified agitation and fear, and the students called the Fire Brigade.
There were no casualties, but the incident cut electricity and water to the residence.
Reportedly, this is not the first time that the residence has suffered a short-circuit.
A statement from the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) Directorate of Social Services and Infrastructure and Maintenance, cited by Miramar on March 23, said that work to repair the damages had already begun.
