Film director and actress Hermelinda Simela dies giving birth in Maputo – Notícias

The actress and filmmaker Hermelinda Simela, one of the most prominent cultural activists in Mozambique, lost her life giving birth to a baby girl at the José Macamo General Hospital in Maputo on Tuesday night (Aug 10.

‘Notícias’ has learned that her daughter survived.

Born in the province of Nampula, Hermelinda Simela had a 23-year artistic career, much of it linked to the Theatre of the Oppressed in Mozambique, which uses theatre as a tool for social intervention. She also worked with children.

Hermelinda Simela was just starting to move towards directing, and her “Phoenix in Hibernation” [“Fénix em Hibernação”] won first prize in a short film competition promoted by the Mozambican-German Cultural Centre (CCMA) in June of this year.

Hermelinda Simela acted in films such as “Mosquito”, by João Nuno Pinto, “Comboio de Sal e Açúcar” [“The Train of Salt and Sugar”] and “Virgem Margarida”, both by Licínio Azevedo, the latter earning her the Best Actress in a Supporting Role award at the 2013 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).

Morreu noite de terça-feira(10), em Maputo, a actriz e cineasta Hermelinda Simela, uma das mais proeminentes activistas culturais da actualidade em Moçambique.

Simela perdeu a vida durante o serviço do parto, no Hospital Geral José Macamo, na cidade de Maputo.Entretanto, o “Notícias” soube que a bebé sobreviveu.

Natural da província de Nampula, Hermelinda Simela somava 23 anos de carreira artística, boa parte ligada ao Centro de Teatro do Oprimido, usandoa representação como ferramenta de intervenção social, e trabalhava também com crianças.

Estava a iniciar-se na realização e, neste sentido, com o filme “Fénix em Hibernação”, conquistou a quinta edição do concurso de curtas-metragens anualmente promovido pelo Centro Cultural Moçambicano-Alemão (CCMA).

Como actriz actuouem filmes como “Mosquito”, de João Nuno Pinto, “Comboio de Sal e Açúcar” e “Virgem Margarida”, ambos de Licínio Azevedo, tendo este último lhe rendidoo prémio de Melhor Actriz Secundária nos African Movie Academy Award (AMAA), da Nigéria.
