Mozambique: Government will turn ENDE 2025-2044 into law
Frelimo President Filipe Nyusi was re-elected Friday with 99.72 percent of a total of 2,115 delegates voting on the fourth day of the 11th Congress of the ruling party in Mozambique, being held since Tuesday.
His re-election as Frelimo (Liberation Front of Mozambique) leader means that Filipe Nyusi, current President of the Republic, will be the candidate of the ruling party to the presidential elections of 2019, having competed and won the 2014 presidential elections.
Of the total 2,115 votes counted, five were blank and one was considered null.
Of the 2,264 delegates to the congress 149 were absent today.
Filipe Nyusi was sworn in by the honorary president of Frelimo and former Mozambican head of state, Joaquim Chissano, who urged party militants to mobilise for victory in the 2019 general election.
Speaking after being sworn in Frelimo president, Filipe Nyusi expressed his willingness to serve the party and the country, noting that the work ahead will be hard.
“What I can assure you is my readiness and willingness to do everything for the party and the Mozambican people. There is no doubt that the work awaiting me is hard,” said the Mozambican head of state.
With the election of the party’s president, Frelimo will today Saturday elect a new Central Committee, Political Commission and secretariat, including the secretary general, .
The 11th Congress of the ruling party, which takes place in the city of Matola, Maputo province, ends on Sunday.
In addition to new bodies, the Frelimo Congress approved the revision of the statutes and the program for the government cycle that will start after the general elections of 2019 should the party win the ballot.
