Portugal marks the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution army coup that brought democracy
Former Portuguese international Luis Figo considers Portgual and Spain, who will share the same group in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, to be the favorites to come out of the group and win the competition.
“Portugal and Spain are the favorites, not only in the group and in the competition itself, although it’s necessary to keep in mind that other countries may surprise,” said Figo during a Christmas event for his foundation in Lisbon.
The former Real Madrid and Barcelona player also said that “without a doubt, Portugal fell into one of the toughest groups, but has one of the best teams today, and expectations should be the same.”
Last Friday’’s draw left Portugal and Spain in Group B along with Iran and Morocco.
The last three official matches between Portugal and Spain tip the balance slightly towards Spain, with one Portugal win in Euro 2004, one by the Spaniards in the 2010 World Cup, and a draw in Euro 2012, in which Spain advances on penalty kicks.
