Heads of State and Government attending the Extra-ordinary Summit of the Organ Troika of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) – plus countries contributing personnel to SAMIM and the Republic of Mozambique – yesterday approved the transition of the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) from Scenario 6, (Rapid Deployment Capability) to Scenario 5 (Multidimensional Force), with a robust mandate.
This transition means that SAMIM is no longer a rapid intervention force, but a force for humanitarian stabilisation and development.
The move, which takes place under African Union rules, comes in light of the encouraging progress made so far by SAMIM, which has brought stability to most of the areas once occupied by terrorists in Cabo Delgado province.
The executive secretary of SADC, Elias Magosi, explained that the Summit directed the Head of Mission to coordinate with the Republic of Mozambique on the implementation of the comprehensive Integrated Reconstruction and Development Plan of Cabo Delgado.
Magosi, who was reading the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, in which Mozambique was represented by President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, highlighted the spirit of solidarity of Zimbabwe and Malawi, expressed through the delivery of a promised donation of food to those affected in Cabo Delgado.
