A study released on Thursday by the United Nations gender equality organization UN Women said that about fifty percent of women in Mozambique has suffered some kind of violence.
The figure was released at a the meeting in Maputo on Wednesday organised by civil society organizations dealing with gender-related issues.
The meeting’s main objective is finding stronger mechanisms to eradicate violence against women.
“In Mozambique, about fifty percent of women, suffer some form of violence at some point in their lives, whether psychological, sexual or patrimonial,” said Marta Cumbe, coordinator of the UN project.
According to Cumbe, there is still much work to be done to eliminate discrimination against women and girls and empower them to achieve equality with men as beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
