Mozambique: Seventeen roads undergoing maintenance work

Fifty-eight people were injured, some of them seriously, in a road accident on the Maputo Ring Road in the Magoanine neighbourhood on Saturday.
Three passenger carriers, one light vehicle and an open box van were involved.
There were no deaths at the close of this edition. Fárida Urci, clinical director of Maputo Central Hospital, where the injured were evacuated to, said 43 of those brought in had been discharged and 15 remained in intensive care.
“Noticias” learned yesterday that some of the hospitalised victims are in critical condition, having suffered serious injuries such as closed abdominal trauma and multiple exposed and internal fractures, in some cases leading to amputation.
According to the police, the victims were travelling in two Toyota Hiace passenger minibuses and an Isuzu station wagon towards Zimpeto/Costa do Sol.
Speeding and ill-considered overtaking by one of the drivers resulted in the vehicles colliding, with substantial damage.
Several entities joined efforts to help the victims, including the Public Salvation Corps, the Police of the Republic of Mozambique and private individuals. Onlookers at the accident site helped free victims trapped in the vehicles.
