On the fourth day of his tour of the southern African region, FIFA President Infantino arrived in Maputo, Mozambique, where he had the chance to discuss with State and football authorities on the progress of football in the country.
One of the highlights of the visit was the audience with Mozambique Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario, himself a football enthusiast and former national player at youth level. The two leaders shared views on the benefit of sport, and football in particular, as a tool for social inclusion and education, for the millions of young people in the country.
Accompanied by a strong delegation including CAF President and FIFA Vice-President Ahmad, FIFA Secretary General and General Delegate for Africa Fatma Samoura, FIFA Deputy General Secretary, Mattias Grafström, FIFA Legend and special advisor to CAF President Samuel Eto’o and FIFA Foundation CEO and FIFA Legend, Youri Djorkaeff, Infantino also had the opportunity to speak with representatives of the local football community under the leadership of the Mozambique Football Federation (FMF) President Alberto Simango.
The FIFA President said: “Mozambique is football, and I am extremely happy to be back in Maputo today, four years after my first visit, when I was a candidate for the presidency of FIFA. I am honoured to witness the progresses made during this period, in a country which gave football two of the biggest players in the history: Eusebio and Mario Coluna. Together with CAF and the FMF we will continue to work hand in hand in order to keep on developing our sport in Mozambique, increasing investments locally and giving hope and smiles to children all around the country and the African continent.”
