Two hundred thousand US dollars are needed to take the National Women’s Senior Basketball Team to the qualifying tournament for the 2026 World Cup, to be held in Mexico from 19 to 25 August.
The amount will be used to purchase tickets and all logistics for the event.
Financial difficulties forced the president of the Mozambican Basketball Federation (FMB), Paulo Mazivila, to announce a withdrawal from the competition.
Mazivila however announced at a press conference yesterday that “there is a glimmer” of hope, and that he is in talks with the government and other partners to make the participation of Mozambique’s team in the global event viable.
However, even if the amount is raised, it will not be possible for the national team to travel on Wednesday, due to logistical reasons.
Regarding the funds supposedly made available by the multinational TotalEnergie, with a view to supporting the national team, the president of the FMB declined to comment, promising to address the issue in 24 hours, that is, this Thursday, at a new press conference.
It will be recalled that Mozambique failed to attend the training camp in the USA due to financial difficulties.
The national women’s basketball team was supposed to have travelled to Pennsylvania in the United States last Thursday, where it was supposed to complete a pre-competition training camp until tomorrow, Wednesday, before participating in the Women’s World Cup Pre-Qualifying Tournaments to be held in Mexico and Rwanda between August 19 and 25, 2024.
In Group B, Mozambique’s debut in the race for the World Cup was scheduled for the early hours of next week’s Tuesday (20), against the home team, Mexico. Two days later, the national team was supposed to face Montenegro, ending its participation with a match against New Zealand on next week’s Saturday.
The FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 will be held in Berlin, Germany. The 20th edition of the prestigious competition will be played in September, 2026, at two premium venues – the Arena Berlin and the Max-Schmeling Halle.
Mozambique first participated in a FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Turkey, ten years ago (2014).
