Ferroviário de Maputo missed out on a gold medal last night in the Fiba Cup in women’s seniors, losing 67-49 to Interclube of Angola in the final.
The “Locomotives” had to make do with the silver medal; some consolation, as it is the first time they have been African runners-up, after finishing third last year. So in spite of their defeat, their objective of improving their ranking was fulfilled, something not thought possible given the Angolans’ high level of play.
Led by Apolinário Paquete, the Angolans played two decisive first periods, leading 22-7 by the end of the first and keeping up the pace in the second. More Inter, less Ferroviário. At half-time, the score was 37-20. Even with a courageous response from the Locomotives, especially in the third period, Inter managed to hold onto their lead and ended up winning by 18 points at the end of the match.
Ferroviário was disappointed not to be the fifth Mozambican team to win the title after Maxaquene, Académica, Desportivo de Maputo and Liga Desportiva de Maputo. Desportivo and Liga in fact won against Inter, but this time victory did not smile on the Mozambicans.
