Mozambique: Known death toll from cyclone rises to six
From May 10, ticket prices on the Inhambane-Maxixe ferry crossing are set to go up.
According to the statement issued by the Provincial Transport and Communications Directorate, the tickets will increase from the current 12.5 to 15 meticais.
Notices announcing the fare increases on the crossing have already been posted at ticket booths. Currently, tickets cost 12.5 meticais, and if they go up by 2.5 meticais, from May 10 they will cost 15 meticais.
The measure is being challenged by users, many of whom say the new fare is unaffordable. Hundreds of people cross Inhambane Bay every day on their way to work or school. Students in particular feel hard done by, and are demanding a concessionary price.
The current price has been in effect for about three years and, according to the Provincial Director of Transport and Communications, rises in fuel prices and general operating costs have dictated the rate adjustment.
Representative Acimo Carimo also observed that special fares for students were only available on Transmarítima boats, which stopped plying the crossing in February last year.
