‘Idas e Voltas’ is the title of a photographic exhibition by Felix Mula which opens tomorrow at the Portuguese Cultural Centre in Maputo [may be translated as ‘Back and Forth’,’ or ‘Round Trips’] .
Idas e Voltas is a stage in the process by which the memories of childhood and family, particularly the father, gain particular prominence.
In an interview with Rafael Mouzinho presented at the Berardo Museum in Lisbon for the Novo Banco 2016 Prize which he won, Mula explains the importance of his father in the work he performs about memory.
“My father introduced me to various family histories and his homeland. But most of all, he introduces me to photography and, later, realising my maturity, he told me stories about his departure from his homeland and his arrival in Maputo, and his first job with the Lee family.”
In the context of the ‘Idas and Voltas’ exhibition, the Camões, Portuguese Cultural Centre will stage a conversation between artists Félix Mula, Gemuce and Rafael Mouzinho on Friday, August 18, at 5:00 p.m. where they will talk about Mula’s process and share ideas and experiences relevant to the project that he has been developing since 2010.
