The European Union has expressed its willingness to continue supporting Mozambique in the face of natural disasters such as floods and drought, and to continue investing in the country’s economic development.
Speaking to reporters in Maputo on Thursday, after an audience granted by President Filipe Nyusi, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, said the EU had every interest in working for the prosperous future of Mozambique.
In her discussion with Nyusi, Mogherini said, she had explained the EU’s “interest in maintaining and strengthening the existing partnership. But we also discussed the regional situation and Mozambican politics. We stressed the importance of the country working for its political stability and the need not to pursue political objectives through the force of arms”.
Mogherini claimed it was necessary to strengthen Mozambican democracy and to advance in national reconciliation.
She took the opportunity to announce that Nyusi will visit the EU headquarters in Brussels on 21-22 April. Her trip to Mozambique was part of the preparations for the presidential visit “which seeks to strengthen the excellent relations between the EU and Mozambique”.
On Wednesday, Mogherini met with Foreign Minister Oldemiro Baloi, and told him that the EU intends to maintain a “robust economic relationship” with Mozambique.
“We want to continue working in various sectors, in economic investments, trade, agriculture, the environment and various others”, she said.
“The EU will continue to support the Mozambican people in this complex and dangerous moment because of the drought and floods, which are affecting the people, their crops and their livestock”, she added.
Baloi told reporters that Mogherini had pledged the EU’s continued willingness to provide direct support to the Mozambican state budget. He hoped that, in partnership with the EU, Mozambique would strengthen the sectors of energy, nutrition and agriculture.
During her visit Mogherini also intended to meet with the largest opposition party Renamo, and with the second parliamentary opposition party, the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) to discuss the current political situation.
