Order and public safety are ensured in Serra da Gorongosa, in Sofala, after a period of unrest following the attacks perpetrated by Renamo armed men guaranteed the Commander of the Defence and Security Forces stationed on site, Wande Bedfor, speaking yesterday to journalists who accompanied him on a visit to the former Renamo base in Nhamagiwa, former Mazembe, recently taken by the Defence and Security Forces. Commander Bedfor recalled that the assault on the base came after an intense firefight that led to the escape in stampede of the men led by Afonso Dhlakama. In fact, according to him, Dhlakama resided on this basis after having been driven out of Santungira by the army.
The former headquarters of Renamo comprises 67 huts, including the residence of Afonso Dhlakama, a guest house, a dining room, a meeting and film projection room, a canteen and a female dorm.
Wande Bedford ensured that people can now move freely on the slopes of Serra da Gorongosa where, incidentally, the population is already developing their agricultural and livestock activities at will.
