A young couple have been detained by police in Maputo province for allegedly attempt to sell the man’s two-year-old daughter to an unidentified individual for 300,000 meticais.
One of the group in custody in Belulane is the child’s father’s cousin.
The father of the child told the press that he had attempted to sell his daughter to get money to entertain his cousin, who had just arrived from Quelimane, and that the would-be buyer, whose name and whereabouts have not been revealed, got in touch with him on Saturday, July 9, through a street seller of mobile phone recharges near his home.
The arrangement was made over the telephone.
“He asked if I had the product (meaning the child) and I said yes, the child was at home, and it was a girl. He said that a girl was what he needed,” the man said.
The transaction was to take place at around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. The child’s stepmother, wife of the accused, said that, at around 5:00 p.m., she asked the girl’s mother if she could take her to buy her a yoghurt.
When she arrived at the kiosk near the house, however, the child’s father’s cousin appeared and suggested that they buy the yogurt elsewhere, where it was supposedly cheaper, but this was ruse to obtain the girl’s disappearance.
