Mozambique police are working to hold accountable the football fans who beat to death a referee after a game in Muidumbe district, Cabo Delgado province.
Police spokesman Inácio Dina said the police had not been informed about the event.
“The police were not notified of the event which, by the way, was recreational and involved more than 30 local teams, to ensure the safety of the field, and we condemn the violent attitude of these supporters,” he said.
Dina said that the organisers filed a complaint after the event and the police were currently attempting to find out what happened and hold those responsible accountable.
He also called on people organising matches to inform the police about the events so as to ensure safety in the same way as happens in official matches.
