The referee at a recreational football match involving two teams from Muidumbe and Mueda in Cabo Delgado last weekend died after being beaten by Muidumbe supporters after their team lost 1-0.
Cláudio Sassita, director of Youth and Sports in Muidumbe, said the episode was serious and that the Muidumbe team fans had chased the referee after the game, allegedly for having given the winning goal.
The chase ended at the Frelimo District Committee building, where the referee took refuge, and the man died at the Mueda Health Centre, where he had been transferred from Muidumbe with severe injuries.
The Youth and Sports directorate is trying to organise a radio debate to discuss the issue of violence in sport in the province of Cabo Delgado.
Other matches involved 29 other teams from two districts in a “bate-sai” (beat-leave) system, with monetary betting involved.
