In a context of great socio-economic and political adversities facing the country, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for the Improvement of the Business Environment (FAN), Leonardo Simão argues for the need for cooperation and establishment of partnerships between public institutions and private, national and international companies to ensure that the business environment is encouraging, fosters the growth and development of existing businesses, and attracts new investments.
Speaking in the presence of the head of state, Filipe Nyusi, businesspeople and national and foreign partners, on the sidelines of the 16th Annual Private Sector Conference in March, Simão highlighted that the improvement of the business environment in Mozambique, as in any other country, is never totally accomplished, because the internal and external environment in which companies operate is constantly changing, with the emergence of new factors influencing the same environment.
“These factors, which are political, economic, social and cultural in nature, are multiple and complex, and no single institution can dominate them and effectively manage them over time, or guarantee the permanence of a healthy business environment,” he said.
Simão therefore urges cooperation and the establishment of partnerships between public and private, national and international institutions for the promotion of a good business environment.
The FAN chairman considers that it is essential to establish a successful business environment as the basis for overcoming poverty, sustaining peace and stabilising society.
“It is this understanding of the factors that contribute to the peace and stability of society that motivated the creation of the Foundation for the Improvement of Business Environment (FAN), which is yet another instrument for Mozambique to use in its struggle for the well-being of each one of its citizens,” he said.
65 million meticais supporting projects
Leonardo Simão went on to reveal that, since its inception in December 2017, FAN has disbursed some 65 million meticais, financing 24 projects submitted by various national institutions.
In that time, FAN had established itself as a committed player, and a partner of the government, the private sector, trade unions and academia in promoting and developing a healthy relationship between national development partners, he said.
The Foundation also supports institutions representing the private sector and workers in defence of the legitimate interests of its associate members, developing greater capacity to carry out their respective tasks in these members.
“It is within this framework of support to the various public and private stakeholders that FAN has been supporting the CTA, recognised as a vehicle that can carry institutional development to each of its members. In addition to actions carried out by the headquarters, FAN also supports initiatives submitted by the Provincial Business Councils, so that the territorial scope of support for business development is as broad as possible,” Simão revealed.
With regard to the public sector, FAN supports the production of studies which help inform decisions and policy options within the framework of a permanent effort to improve the business environment.
In the near future, FAN intends to support municipality and district initiatives, within the framework of the ongoing decentralisation process.
