Family said work of Afonso Dhlakama “has world dimension and will never die”; Youth leader urged “Do not be cowed! Be Dhlakama!”

Wrapped in the flag of the Republic of Mozambique and borne by a military guard of honour, the “father of democracy”, Afonso Macacho Marceta Dhlakama, was mourned and celebrated by tens of thousands of Mozambicans this Wednesday in the city of Beira’s Railway Station Square, who heard his relatives’ representative immortalise him: “Your teachings spread through the mountains, savannas, plateaus, rivers and seas, your work has a world dimension and will never die.”
Even without a special holiday, the people rejoiced when the president of the Youth League urged “Do not be cowed! Be Dhlakama!”
Mozambique did not stop to bid farewell to the “father of democracy”; the government did not declare a public holiday, even in the city of Beira. But thousands of citizens gathered outside Beira railway station to bid farewell to the man who gave up comfort and luxury, and gave his life for democracy.
“The form and the place which you left further magnifies your status, and increasingly values your humanity, humility and altruism in favour of the cause of the majority,” his family began by saying in the message read by Argentina Sebastião Marceta Cumba.

“We believe and accept the heroic way you carried out your work and we are proud that you never abandoned your comrades in the years of struggle. You did not want the bed in the hospital, you did not want the hospital lights with the medical and paramedical staff dressed in white. You chose to remain with the men and women who refuse any kind of subjugation. You preferred to leave from the green bed, the grass [capim], sign of hope to your people. You preferred to leave from the top of the mountain,” she added.
“A man like you does not die, he reinvents himself for the good of the majority. Your surrender to your people is illustrated by the fact that most of the time you deprived us of your life because you realised that your life belonged not to the family but to the people, for whom you accepted a death witnessed by the song of birds.”
“Your people weeps, your family weeps, but your teachings spread through the mountains, the savannas, plateaus, rivers and seas. Your work has a world dimension and will never die. You did not die: you will always be present in our hearts. Rest in peace, man of humanity.”

In the words of the president of the Youth League and deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, Ivone Soares, Afonso Dhlakama was the general of the generals.
“His was the undefeated shield against the injustices of the powerful, the one who protected us from the abuses of those who use governance to perpetuate tyrannies and their own privileges.”

“We have lost the Father of Mozambican Democracy, but there remain his ideals to guide our practice in defence of freedom of thought and expression. The tears that the young people of Renamo and the whole society pour out are a sign of our pain,” Ivone Soares declared, appealing for a celebration of the life of Afonso Dhlakama through “the commitment to continue the path of progress that he has shown us and to fulfil the objectives of the work that he had in hand: to consolidate democracy, promote social justice and guarantee a better future for our people”.
The youth leader asked that Mozambicans not forget that “even when persecuted by the system and regime in force, he refused the comfort and luxury they offered him in favour of fighting for freedom. If freedom today echoes through every corner of Mozambique, it is due to his tireless struggle,” she said, demanding for Dhlakama recognition that he had changed the Mozambican constitution, consecrating “today’s equal rights for men and women”.
“Compatriots, from now on, I exhort you not to be cowed, but to be Dhlakama!”
“In 1994, the first democratic elections were held, and although he was not formally elected President of the Republic, Afonso Dhlakama was elected president of Mozambique in the hearts of the most disadvantaged, the most wronged, all of those who the system placed – and continues to place – on the peripheries of society,” the head of Renamo’s bench in parliament said.
“President Nyusi’s visit to Serra da Gorongoza is a sign that he understood that General Dhlakama was the bearer of a multicultural message, a man with the soul of a young being, superior and open to all. He truly had all Mozambicans at heart, and so his death, even if it is cause for pain, is not the end of hope for a better life.”
“He departs, but we are still his followers! Keeping alive his dream of a free and democratic country, a place where Mozambicans are truly equal in opportunities and rights. Dhlakama went to rest after 42 years serving the Mozambican people. Compatriots, from now on, I exhort you to not be cowed, but to be Dhlakama!” the youth leader urged, causing the thousands of people present to rejoice, applauding her and shouting: “Dhlakama! Dhlakama! Dhlakama!”

Envolto na bandeira da República de Moçambique e carregado por uma guarda militar de honra o “pai da democracia”, Afonso Macacho Marceta Dhlakama, foi velado por dezenas de milhares de moçambicanos nesta quarta-feira (09), no largo do CFM na cidade da Beira, que ouviram a representante dos seus parentes imortaliza-lo: “os teus ensinamentos espalham-se pelas montanhas, savanas, planaltos, rios e mares, a tua obra tem dimensão mundial e jamais morrerá”. Mas o povo, mesmo sem tolerância de ponto, rejubilou quando a Presidente da Liga da Juventude exortou “não se acovardem sejam Dhlakama!”
Moçambique não parou para despedir-se do “pai da democracia”, o Governo não declarou feriado nem acedeu ao pedido de tolerância de ponto na cidade da Beira. Porém milhares de cidadãos juntaram-se no largo dos Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM), na cidade da Beira, para se despedirem do homem que abdicou do conforto e do luxo e deu a sua vida pela democracia. “A forma e o lugar de onde partiste engrandece mais ainda o teu estatuto e valoriza cada vez mais a tua humanidade, humildade, altruísmo em prol da causa da maioria”, começou por dizer a sua família na mensagem lida por Argentina Sebastião Marceta Cumba.
“Acreditamos e aceitamos a forma heróica como fizeste a tua obra e nos orgulhamos de nunca teres abandonado os teus companheiros de longos anos de luta. Não quiseste os leitos dos hospitais, não quiseste os holofotes encandecestes com o pessoal médico e paramédico vestido de branco. Escolheste partir ao lado dos homens e mulheres que se negam a subjugação de qualquer espécie. Preferiste partir no leito verde, capim, sinal de esperança do teu povo. Preferiste partir do alto da montanha”, acrescentou, emocionando quem a ouvia.
Para a família do falecido líder do maior partido da oposição em Moçambique, “Homem como tu não morre, reinventa-se para o bem da maioria. A sua entrega ao seu povo ilustrado pelo facto de na maioria das vezes ter nos privado do teu convívio porque tu percebeste que a tua vida pertencia não a família mas sim ao povo, pelo qual aceitaste morrer sob testemunha dos cânticos dos pássaros”.
“O teu povo chora, tua família chora, os teus ensinamentos espalham-se pelas montanhas, savanas, planaltos, rios e mares, a tua obra tem dimensão mundial e jamais morrerá. Tu não morreste, estarás sempre presente nos nossos corações, descansa em paz homem da humanidade”, disse ainda Argentina Sebastião Marceta Cumba.
“Se a liberdade hoje ecoa em todos os cantos de Moçambique, isso se deve à sua incansável luta”
Nas palavras da presidente da Liga da Juventude e deputada na Assembleia da República, Ivone Soares, Afonso Dhlakama foi o general dos generais: “que era o escudo intransponível contra as injustiças dos poderosos, aquele que nos protegia dos abusos dos que usam a governação para perpetuar tiranias e privilégios próprios”.
“Perdemos o Pai da Democracia Moçambicana, mas ficam os seus ideais para guiar a nossa prática em defesa da liberdade de pensamento e expressão. As lágrimas que os jovens da RENAMO e toda a sociedade vertem são sinal da nossa dor” declarou Ivone Soares apelando para a celebração da vida de Afonso Dhlakama “com o compromisso de prosseguir o caminho de progresso que nos mostrou e cumprir os objectivos da obra que tinha em mãos: consolidar a democracia, promover a justiça social e garantir um futuro melhor para o nosso povo”.
A líder juvenil pediu para que os moçambicanos não se esqueçam que, “mesmo perseguido pelo sistema e regime vigentes, foi capaz de recusar o conforto e os luxos que lhe ofereciam para lutar pela liberdade. Se a liberdade hoje ecoa em todos os cantos de Moçambique, isso se deve à sua incansável luta” e reclamou para Dhlakama o mérito da Constituição de Moçambique ter sido alterada e consagrar “hoje direitos iguais a homens e mulheres”.
“Compatriotas, de hoje em diante, exorto-vos não se acovardem sejam Dhlakama!”
“Em 1994 realizaram-se as primeiras eleições democráticas e, apesar de não ter sido empossado formalmente como Presidente da República, Afonso Dhlakama foi eleito Presidente de Moçambique no coração dos mais desfavorecidos, dos mais injustiçados, de todos aqueles que o sistema colocou – e continua a colocar – na periferia da sociedade”, declarou a chefe da bancada do partido Renamo na Assembleia da República.
Ivone Soares afirmou na sua elegia que: “A visita do Presidente Nyusi à Serra da Gorongoza é o sinal de ter compreendido que o general Dhlakama era portador de uma mensagem multiculturalista, homem com a alma de um ser jovem, superior e aberto para todos. Ele tinha verdadeiramente todos os Moçambicanos no coração e por isso a sua morte, se é motivo de dor, não é o fim da esperança para uma vida melhor”.
“Ele parte, mas ficamos nós, os seus continuadores! Mantendo vivo o seu sonho de um país livre e democrático, lugar onde Moçambicanos sejam verdadeiramente iguais em oportunidades e direitos. Dhlakama foi descansar depois de 42 anos ao serviço do povo moçambicano. Compatriotas, de hoje em diante, exorto-vos não se acovardem sejam Dhlakama!”, a jovem líder que fez os milhares de presentes rejubilarem, aplaudirem-na em pé e gritarem “Dhlakama, Dhlakama, Dhlakama”
