The family of the Limpopo man presumed to have drowned while on honeymoon in Mozambique plans to appoint private divers to continue with the search before the end of this week.
The week-long search for 29-year-old Livhuwani Malivhoho of Tshaulu village outside Thohoyandou was suspended last week.
Mozambican authorities say they had given out warnings against swimming from the country’s beaches before the couple arrived in Mozambique.
Malivhoho and his new wife, 26-year-old Vhutshilo were enjoying their honeymoon at the beach at Inhambane, some 450 kilometers north of Maputo when disaster struck.
Vhutshilo says she looked away just for a moment, and Livhuwani had disappeared.
Local fishermen and residents from Inhambane searched for him in the Indian Ocean’s waters without success.
Professional divers organised by the South African High Commissioner’s office in Mozambique were also unsuccessful.
The search was halted last week but is expected to continue either on Wednesday or Thursday.
The family says it is engaging a private company in Mozambique to continue the search.
Family spokesperson, Mulalo Tshikalange says the family needs closure.
“We have decided to pursue the search for our brother; we are going ahead with the use of private professional divers we are intending to start with this process before the end of this week. We will be engaging the private companies for two days in the search of Livhuwani Malivhoho. Even if we could not find him it will be fine with us, it will be a comfort to us.”
Limpopo provincial government spokesperson Phuthi Seloba says government will continue to support the family.
“On a regular basis we are visiting the family. Our team for international relations Vho Phathela has also been interacting with the family on regular basis just to ensure that we are able to comfort them and they remain strong. We will always supporting them on whatever decision they are taking.”
Tshikalange says they are grateful for the support they are getting from government and the public. He also thanked the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) for broadcasting the story.
“We are almost half way to the target (R50 000) that we have set. We are grateful and we are thankful to government in particular the Limpopo province. They have been a pillar of support to the entire family. We have seen them almost every day and as well as SABC, I mean everybody know about this incident because of the SABC.”
The family was dealt another blow when Malivhoho’s wife, Vhutshilo lost her grandmother, who will be buried on Saturday.
