Mozambique: Manuel Soares appointed interim chairman of Moza Banco
In file Club of Mozambique / The Ministry has detected six false labor inspectors.
The Mozambican Labor Ministry on Friday warned that criminals are passing themselves off as government labour inspectors in order to extort money from companies.
A press release from the Ministry said that “groups of individuals have been detected who have swindled companies in various sectors of activity, through illegal inspections and demands for money”. They have claimed to be labour inspectors “but have no ties with the State”.
In Maputo city alone, the Ministry has detected six false labor inspectors, but fears they are part of a criminal network acting across the country. Investigations under way in the other provinces, seeking to establish the seriousness of the situation, suggest that this is indeed a nationwide problem.
The real General Inspectorate of Labor (IGT) has, thanks to the cooperation of some employers, managed to obtain some of the forged badges which the self-styled inspectors use to enter workplaces.
This badge, the Ministry points out, even if it were genuine, is not sufficient proof of identity. A real labor inspector should be able to produce an inspector’s card which contains full identification and personal codes, and the swindlers do not appear to have been able to forge such a document.
The Ministry encourages all employers to denounce any suspicious activity by individuals calling themselves inspectors. If necessary, employers should contact the nearest office of the Labor Administration to check the identity of inspectors.
The Ministry does not yet know how much money false inspectors have extorted from companies, but guarantees that work is continuing to dismantle this network.
