A 26-year-old man caught impersonating traffic police has been in police custody since Friday. The accused tried to extort 30,000 meticais from a Portuguese driver who he claimed had committed a traffic infringement.
The accused, however, denies the allegation and claims simply to have drawn the infringement to the driver’s attention. “I just told him that he was committing an infringement. I did not charge him any money,” he explained.
Maputo police spokesman Paulo Nazaré however said that the accused, whose name has not been revealed, had been practicing this activity for some time using a letter of identification from the traffic police. “The young man is a criminal and used a letter of identification, which he swallowed at the time of his arrest,” Nazaré said.
