Mozambique: Ex-president's son guilty in hidden debt scandal released on parole

A young man lost part of a leg as he tried to extract mercury from an explosive device using a grinder in the municipality of Matola.
Witnesses report that three young men, one a member of the military who used his residence to store explosive devices allegedly stolen from his barracks, were are reportedly extracting mercury from the armaments, a business which the accident had brought to light.
Due to the seriousness of his injuries, the victim was being transferred from the Matola Gare Health Centre to the provincial hospital when the Miramar reporter arrived.
Apparently, sounds of grinders at work were common in this house.
One eye witness testified: “Three men came with a grinder and began using it, but I didn’t pay much attention to what was going on. Then heard an explosion and saw a huge fire. I took the children to hide in Mrs. Virginia’s house. When I looked more closely, I saw one man with his leg blown off. They say the leg is in the neighbour’s yard.”
