Mozambique Elections: Renamo members call for Momade's resignation - AIM
Notícias / Jaime Basílio Monteiro (L) and Ângelo Veiga Tavares (R), Angola and Mozambique Interior ministers in a press conference in Maputo, on Friday, February 12 2016.
Speaking in Maputo on Friday, Angolan Interior Minister Ângelo Veiga Tavares connected the trial of 17 Angolan activists on charges of preparing a rebellion with external attempts to put “docile governments” in power.
“Attempts are being made to transfer power over to docile governments and, in some cases, young people are used in the attempt to implement in Angola what is implemented in other countries,” he said.
Tavares was referring to the case involving 15 Angolans under house arrest in Luanda and two others accused of preparing an uprising and an attack on the Angolan president.
“When the law is violated, the people who do so must feel its full weight. The trial of these young people is a normal process and has had a normal course from the gathering of evidence to the judicial phase, where it now is,” the minister told the press.
The activists’ trial has been dragging on since November and was suspended again last Friday until February 23 due to the absence of witnesses.
The 17 are accused of meeting in Luanda between May and June and preparing the overthrow of the elected government.
“The evidence has been made public, and the claims and disputes will be dealt with in the judicial framework. We hope that the court does its job,” Tavares added.
The Angolan government had previously identified other groups of young Angolan activists attempting to the destabilize the country from beyond its borders.
“To some extent, this has not ceased since our independences,” Tavares maintains.
The visit by the Angolan representatives to Mozambique also aimed to identify new areas of mutual interest, working within the framework of cooperation agreements signed in 2003 and 2008 between the commands-general of the two countries’ police forces.
Angelo Veiga Tavares was accompanied by the general commander of the Angolan police and the general directors of the Criminal Investigation Service, the Immigration Service and the Civil and Fire Protection service, among others.
