The transformation of the Criminal Investigation Police (PIC) into the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) would better utilise the knowledge and professional experience of the staff in criminal proceedings, Mozambique Attorney General Beatriz Buchili said yesterday in Maputo at the opening of the Second National Meeting between the Public Ministry and the Criminal Investigation Police.
This meeting takes place at a time when it has been decided to transform the PIC [ Polícia de Investigação Criminal] into SERNIC [ Serviço Nacional de Investigação Criminal], making the institution a more truly auxiliary body to the public ministry.
“With the creation of SERNIC, the expectations of both the administration of justice system and society in general that our capacity to investigate crimes prosecute those responsible will grow,” she said.
In addition to restructuring and strengthening institutions, all are called to make their contribution in order to achieve this goal, Buchili said, lending their knowledge and experience to the process so that it can be said in the end that the exercise was worth it.
Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Police José Weng San said that, since the Police of the Republic of Mozambique and the Attorney General’s Office were the privileged gatekeepers of the formal justice system, officials in this sector had a responsibility to lead the way in terms of legality, objectivity and exemplary conduct in order to safeguard the decisions of courts of law.
The meeting between the Public Prosecution Service and the Criminal Investigation Police aims at jointly evaluating the processes carried out and standardising working methods in order to guarantee the speed and quality of the two institutions’ procedural activity.
