Ex-boyfriend of Samora Machel’s daughter serving prison sentence

Mozambican police have arrested Josina Machel’s ex-boyfriend Rofino Licuco, convicted in February for assaulting Samora and Graça Machel’s daughter, his defence lawyer told Lusa on Monday.
Anita Sumbarane said that the matter concerned the 200 million meticais (EUR 2.7 million) compensation, which had not paid been paid into court as stipulated.
Licuco was arrested on Friday outside a hearing he had been called to to make statements concerning his accusation that the judge in his caase had mishandled his sentencing.
“We were not previously informed about the arrest – we were there on a different matter,” Sumbarane said, adding that the case against the judge would continue and that the defence would appeal.
“There is no other alternative: we will appeal. We will submit a complaint to the appropriate person,” she said.
In February, the Maputo Judicial Court sentenced Rofino Licuco to a suspended three years, four months’ prison sentence for assaulting Josina Machel, daughter of Samora and Graça Machel, leaving the victim blind in one eye.
The court ordered Licuco to pay compensation within 30 days, failing which he would be sent to jail.
The court hearing the domestic violence case ruled that 41-year-old Josina Machel had lost her sight as a result of an October 2015 assault by Rofino Licuco, her 39-year-old Mozambican businessman boyfriend at the time.
