The launching ceremony of the European Union Training Mission in Mozambique (EUTM-Mozambique) will be held at the Katembe Marines Corps Base and at the Dongo Military Camp (Chimoio), on Wednesday (November 3).
The mission is the European Union’s response to the Mozambican authorities request for increased European support in the fields of peace and security, resulting from a decision by the Council of the EU. Its aim is to train and support the Mozambique Armed Forces (FADM) to protect the population and restore the security situation in the north of the country
This is the first EU military mission in Mozambique and has a formative rather than executive purpose and a two-year mandate. During this period, it will support the training of FADM units that will form part of a future quick reaction force (QRF).
During the mission, operational military training, specialised counter-terrorism training and training in the fields of protection of the population and compliance with international humanitarian law and human rights, in particular with regard to the protection of women and children, will be provided.
EUTM-Mozambique will be commanded by Vice Admiral Hervé Bléjean, Director of the Military Planning and Conduct Capability (CMPC). On the ground, the operational direction will be under the command of Portuguese Brigadier- general Nuno Lemos Pires.
