EUMAM MOZ strengthens Gender Perspective integration in its Mission in Mozambique

The European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM MOZ) has been playing an active role in promoting gender equality and protecting human rights by systematically integrating the gender perspective into all phases of its mandate.
At the EUMAM MOZ headquarters, a dedicated Gender Adviser (GENAD) works in close coordination with the Mission Force Commander, Brigadier General Luís Barroso, and the entire Staff to ensure that gender considerations are incorporated into the planning, analysis, and implementation of the mission’s activities.
The integration of gender perspective into military operations is recognised as a key element in reversing insecurity dynamics and promoting more stable and inclusive environments, in line with International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights standards.
In this context, the EUMAM MOZ GENAD plays a crucial role in supporting and monitoring the Mozambican Armed Defence Forces (FADM) activities in matters related to gender-sensitive planning and training. This work aims to raise awareness and equip military personnel with the necessary tools to ensure that all actions, whether on the ground or at an institutional level, respect and protect the rights and needs of women, men, girls, and boys.
Beyond supporting the mission and FADM directly, the Gender Adviser also plans, coordinates, and delivers specialised gender training sessions, with particular focus on preventing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), a phenomenon that often worsens in contexts of crisis, insecurity and conflict.
The mission also maintains close cooperation with United Nations agencies, other international organisations, and civil society partners, reinforcing the European Union’s commitment to human rights, combating gender-based violence, and contributing to building lasting and inclusive peace in Mozambique.
