The European Union Assistance Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM MOZ), together with the Mozambican Armed Defence Forces (FADM), organized the delivery of donations to the orphanage “Esperança”, located in Katembe district, handed on Monday, 16th of June, in the context of the celebration of the International Day of the African Child.
On Monday morning military personnel from EUMMAM MOZ and FADM came together to make a donation of children`s clothing and bed sheets. Besides the symbolic occasion to show solidarity to add even more hope to the lives of these children, this action was preceded by previous encounters with the institution where these needs were identified. The “Esperança” orphanage suffered a fire in 2022, resulting in significant material losses. This unfortunate event has further increased the material vulnerability of the children, who now face even greater challenges due to the destruction of essential items. The orphanage also serves as a temporary shelter for children that have their situation undefined, whether they are being transferred to other care centers or being reintegrated into their families and communities.
In the beginning of this month of June, EUMAM MOZ delivered several boxes of “Meals Ready-to-Eat” (MREs) and during the visit, Helena Bambo, the head of the orphanage, informed that many clothes were lost in the fire, and that any donations of clothing would be very helpful which bring EUMAM MOZ to reunion forces once again with the FADM and make this gesture on this day.
Major Domingos Tsenane, from the FADM, highlighted the important role that the Union European Mission has been playing with the realizations of this Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) helping the children’s that are “the future of Mozambique”. Lieutenant-Colonel Jorge Agostinho, chief of the J9 responsible for CIMIC activities of EUMAM MOZ, reinforced the message of hope to the children of the orphanage inviting them “to believe in future and to study, searching for important and necessary tools for the tomorrow”.
Engaging in initiatives like this is essential for fostering solidarity and support within communities. EUMAM MOZ is composed by 83 military from 10 European Union member states Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, Spain and one non-European Union member state, Serbia.
