The European Union (EU) will spend EUR 37.5 million euros combatting malnutrition in Mozambican children under the agreement of the 11th European Development Fund for Mozambique signed in 2015.
According to a statement sent to Lusa on Tuesday, the amount will be channelled through two conventions, which will be signed on Thursday between the European Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique.
The provinces of Zambezia in the centre of the country and Nampula in the north were chosen for the implementation of the first phase of the project, which will last five years.
“The program is part of the ‘rural development’ priority sector within the National Indicative Program and will support the coordination and strategic planning functions of the Government in the area of nutrition,” the statement reads.
The support also foresees the creation of a fund to update figures on children affected by malnutrition, as a way to better guide the combat strategies.
Official data indicates that 43 percent of Mozambican children suffer from chronic malnutrition, a problem that is becoming more pronounced in rural areas.
The agreement of the 11th European Development Fund, signed on November 26, 2015, provides for EUR 734 million by 2020, of which 200 million would be directed into the state budget over the same period.
In April of this year, the EU was one of 14 state budget donor entities which suspended funding as a result of the revelation of the government-guaranteed loans and hidden from public accounts.
