The European Union (EU) has reiterated its support for Mozambique in a variety of areas related to the country’s development and well-being.
This position was expressed yesterday in Brussels during a meeting between President Nyusi and EU Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen.
Speaking to journalists accompanying the president on his trip, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Manuel Rodrigues said at the end of the meeting that President Nyusi and Commissioner Urpilainen had studied ways of working together to address current challenges.
Notable among these, Rodrigues said, were the natural disasters which regularly affect Mozambique.
He recalled that the EU had always been at the forefront of mobilizing resources to deal with the aftermath of disasters – for example, the role it played in post-Idai reconstruction, especially in Sofala province. In fact, this matter is to be discussed in depth when the President of the Republic meets the EU Commissioner for Development and Climate Action.
Manuel Rodrigues also relayed the EU’s willingness to continue to support Mozambique in its plan for the reconstruction of Cabo Delgado province, which has been seriously affected by terrorist attacks. Indeed, the European Union has a military mission in Mozambique dedicated to the training of troops facing the armed groups in the province. This two-year mission is providing specialized training in combating terrorism and protecting civilians, especially pregnant women and girls, in the context of human rights.
The deputy minister also referred to the EU’s role in cooperation with Mozambique as a matter for consideration during the head of state’s visit to Brussels, noting the significance of its support for the implementation of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement signed between the government and Renamo.
In the continuation of his working visit to Brussels, President Nyusi will establish contacts with the President of the European Council and other individuals linked to the institution.
