The European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique marks its first anniversary today, September 1st, continuing the EU’s military partnership with Mozambique, which began in 2021 with the Training Mission.
Over the course of this first year, the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM MOZ), in close cooperation with the Mozambican Armed Defence Forces (FADM), implemented 16 capacity-building programmes involving more than 500 Mozambican military personnel.
These activities, carried out through an integrated approach, included programmes in areas such as Command and Control, Logistics, Training of Trainers for Rapid Reaction Force instructors, Resupply and Transport, Leadership, Military Pedagogy, Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC), Strategic Communication, and Institutional Advising to the General Staff. In parallel, key programmes were launched to ensure the logistical sustainability of the equipment provided under the European Peace Facility (EPF).
In a message shared on the Mission’s social media, the EUMAM MOZ Force Commander, Brigadier General Luís Barroso, thanked all mission members and contributing countries, highlighting the importance of the joint work with the FADM, which has already enabled the training and capacity development of over 500 Mozambican soldiers.
For his part, the Chief of the General Staff of Mozambique, General Júlio dos Santos Jane, in a message dedicated to EUMAM MOZ’s first anniversary, expressed his hopes that “this anniversary serves as a reminder of the positive impact you have in Mozambique and around the world, as well as a motivation to continue serving with the same enthusiasm and dedication. Congratulations to EUMAM MOZ, and may we continue working together for a future of peace and prosperity, free from terrorism and other threats to peace and progress.”
Ambassador Antonino Maggiore, Head of the EU Delegation to Mozambique, stressed that EUMAM MOZ strengthens the security partnership between the European Union and Mozambique, which is a central pillar of the cooperation.
EUMAM MOZ is a non-executive mission aimed at assisting the FADM in developing capabilities to ensure the operational deployment cycle of the Rapid Reaction Forces is implemented and sustained, with full respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law. The mandate of EUMAM MOZ runs until June 2026.
The European Union Mission in Mozambique is currently commanded by Portuguese Brigadier General Luís Barroso and includes 83 military personnel from 11 different nationalities.
