The European Union said on Wednesday that it has approved €9 million to support general elections set for Mozambique in October 2019.
EU ambassador to Mozambique, António Sanchez-Benedito said the European bloc is mobilising funds to support the Mozambican authorities during the upcoming elections.
“We have been monitoring all the elections in Mozambique and we will also be there next year,” Sanchez-Benedito told journalists after meeting speaker of the Mozambican parliament Veronica Macamo in Maputo.
Meanwhile, the ruling Frelimo has announced that party leader and sitting President Filipe Nyusi will run for re-election in 2019 and is expected to square off with opposition Renamo party’s yet to be appointed new leader.
The opposition party has had an interim leader since the death of Afonso Dhlakama in May this year.
