Ethiopian Airlines to start direct flights from Beira to Addis Ababa

Ethiopian Airlines will soon start direct flights from the city of Beira in central Mozambique to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Speaking in Maputo at the arrival and public presentation of Mozambican crew members who underwent two months’ training Addis Ababa, Director General in Mozambique Daniel Tsige said a 160-seat Boeing 737 MAX aircraft would fly the route five times a week.

The newly trained Mozambicans will join Ethiopian Mozambique Airlines (EMA) crew members on domestic flights, boosting nationals’ employment numbers.

Tsige also said that the carrier was committed to promoting air connectivity in Mozambique and increasing the share of African airlines in the national air transport market.

“The Mozambicans who were in training in Ethiopia flew on a Boeing 737 MAX airplane with a capacity for 160 seats. This is a model that our company currently has only operated in the African air market,” Tsige said.

In his view, Ethiopian Airlines is making significant investments in the launch of this new African airline in Mozambique, and he is confident that, with a market- and customer-oriented approach, the company “will succeed in its goals and will assume its place in the African landscape as a strong group”.

Ethiopian Airlines created Ethiopian Mozambique Airlines, which began operating on 1 December 2018, serving eight domestic destinations in Mozambique: Maputo and Nampula in the north, Tete (centre), Pemba (north), Beira (centre ), Nacala (north), Quelimane and Chimoio (centre), with flights on three Bombardier Q400 aircraft, a number which company representatives say can be increased with rising demand.
