President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey said yesterday in Maputo that people allegedly involved in the attempted coup in Turkey have a wide network of institutions in Mozambique and asked local authorities for support in their neutralization.
“We know that members of this group [allegedly involved in the attempted coup] are present in Mozambique, have infiltrated the Turkish Armed Forces and are replicating their initiative, their hidden agenda, in various parts of the world. They have a vast network of schools and associations in various parts of the world and they have a very broad network here in Mozambique,” a statement released to the press at the end of talks between Turkish and Mozambican delegations reads.
Without naming names, the Turkish head of state said that these institutions would try to achieve in Mozambique the same goals they pursue in Turkey.
“What they are trying to achieve in Turkey, they will try to achieve in Mozambique, sooner or later. It is something that calls our attention. These are issues that we have to overcome,” Erdogan said.
President Erdogan added that his country is ready to help Mozambique neutralize elements hostile to the Turkish government, and that his visit yesterday will be a turning point in bilateral cooperation.
Present alongside Erdogan, Mozambican president Filipe Nyusi made no reference to the matter, making statements only regarding economic and trade cooperation between the two countries and the six bilateral agreements that the two governments signed.
Alongside the strengthening of economic and trade relations, the neutralization of people the Turkish government accuses of being loyal to Muslim leader Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara accuses of instigating the attempted coup last July, is one of the central themes of Erdogan’s current visit to Mozambique, Tanzania and Madagascar.
