A large-scale operation is currently underway to remove the more than 500 miners who operate in the mine in question, among whom are Mozambicans, Tanzanians, Congolese, Malawians and Zimbabweans.
The court mentions drug trafficking, money laundering, illegal immigration and smuggling of weapons and explosives as being associated with the artisanal mining. In arrests sanctioned by the court last April, four individuals targeted were found in possession of two unregistered firearms.
