Notícias / Mozambican First Lady Isaura Nyusi, speaking in Kigali, Rwanda, on the fight against early marriage
Ending early marriage and enhancing girls’ access to education is a challenge for the entire African continent, and for Mozambique in particular.
According to Isaura Nyusi, wife of the Mozambican president, early marriage is a serious public health issue in the country, and a sexual and reproductive health component should be introduced in the school curriculum at national level.
Speaking at a meeting of African First Ladies on the margins of the 27th African Union Heads of State and Government Summit, Isaura Nyusi revealed that Mozambique ranks seventh highest in early marriage rates globally.
The First Lady revealed that 79 percent of women and 67.9 percent of men initiate sexual activity before the age of 18, 46.4 percent of girls become mothers or fall pregnant for the first time between the ages of 15 and 19, and 14.3 per cent of girls marry before the age of 15.
