This year, the province of Nampula plans to finance at least 60 projects to boost entrepreneurship and reduce youth unemployment.
Unemployment remains a concern in Mozambique. According to data published in 2013 by the Organization of Mozambique Workers – Trade Union Central, over 30% of the population is unemployed. Most are young.
Lucas Constantino, 34, completed grade 12 in 2001, but until now did not get his first job. The young man, born in Monapo, in Nampula province, is the father of two sons and resorts to small businesses to survive:
“I have a small tent where I sell mobile recharges,” he says. “But I asked support from the Youth Initiatives Support Fund (FAIS) to develop my business – at least 20,000 meticais [about 320 euros] help to develop the activity and thus support the family.”
Carlos Muquina, 25, left in January 2013 to his homeland in Mocuba district, in Zambezia, to seek employment, “With 30,000 meticais [476 euros] I will be able to have an aviary and thus sell chickens and eggs to continue to help my family. ”
Is the aid working?
To qualify for the help of FAIS projects that can generate income for young people and their families are required.
According to Raúl Cachimo, provincial director of Youth and Sports in Nampula 800,000 meticais (about 12,700 euros) are available for this purpose. “We will continue to fund the youth so that self-employment and sustainability are more effective,” says Cachimo.
Before receiving funding, young people benefit from training, included in the financial education program of the National Youth Institute.
“Financial education is important for young people to make responsible decisions and reflected on the proper use of their resources,” said Elias William, from that institution.
Last year, 25,000 young people were formed in financial education in the cities of Maputo and Matola, in the south. Part of them benefited from government support.
