A press release issued yesterday by the Company Municipal Public Transports of Maputo (EMTPM) announces that it will tomorrow (01-06) implement the new transport tariff theoretically in force since last February 27.
The EMTPM explains that “on 27 February last, the new tariff for the provision of public passenger transport services in the Municipality of Maputo and surroundings came into force, with an increase of 3.00 meticais”.
However, the implementation of the new tariff (15.00 meticais for distances less than or equal to 10 km and 18.00 meticais for distances greater than 10 km) was not applied by companies operating in the Maputo metropolitan area, as it was considered part of the package of emergency measures predicated by the floods in the region.
The emergency period is now ended, and with a view to making companies’ operations viable and ensuring their continuity, EMPTM will implement from the 1st of June the new tariff, raising 12.00 meticais fares to 15.00 meticais, and 15 meticais fares to 18 meticais.
According to the organization, the implementation of the current tariff is intended to standardize the tariff structure applied by all operators in the Maputo metropolitan area and avoid distortions in the market where EMTPM operates.
