Eleven emerging designers from various universities and secondary schools in the city and province of Maputo presented their proposed clothing trends on the third day of the largest fashion festival in Mozambique.
Designer Lina Mathombe, a student at Instituto Primeiro de Maio, won the MFW School 2017 Best Look with her “Night” collection.
Lina has been a Vodacom Mozambique Fashion Week (MFW) participant since last year, and won against competitors who have been at this event for more than three years. The event aims to encourage young designers who are still in the early phases of their careers.
“I’m very surprised by the prize. I did not expect it. I know there are a lot of good designers, but I’m happy to have been chosen by the jury,” she said.
The young designer won a sewing machine and kit, a course participation and a bicycle.
The jury team acknowledged the efforts of emerging designers and offered some recommendations.
“We need work of higher quality, better suited to conquer outside markets,” they said.
