Elephants create panic in four communities of two districts of Maputo province

Residents of Brasólia, Chihacho and Nguenha, in Tinonganine, Matutuíne district, and of Mahele, in Magude district, say elephants there have been trampling large areas of crops.

In Magude district, around five hectares of cultivation are claimed to have been destroyed by up to 11 of the pachyderms.

Forestry and wildlife technician João Cuambe says that an intervention by the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC) to chase the elephants away from the populated areas is awaited.

Fearing for their lives, communities are no longer cultivating their ‘machambas’ (vegetable gardens), Cuambe added.
