Elephants and hippos on the move has been sowing panic among residents of Sabie administrative post in Moamba, Maputo province.
The animals, which have escaped from the surrounding conservation areas, have devastated more than 30 hectares of crops recently.
“We had serious problems. Hippos devastated about 30 hectares in Malengane. We also had some elephants that devastated machambas belonging to members of the Mucacaza 1 community. These elephants – there are six of them – come from the Tonga reserve,” one resident said.
